Questions and answers
Answer types, answer options, images, and the parts each answer adds to the quote.
Questions are what customers answer. Each one belongs to a section. Go to Questions, pick a section in the filter, and click + New question.
The question editor
- What do you want to ask?: the question as customers see it, for example “What type of door do you need?”
- Help text (optional): a line under the question to help customers choose, such as “Measure the opening, not the old door.”
- Short label for the review page (optional): the review screen lists answers as “Door type: Automatic”. Without a short label it uses the whole question, which reads awkwardly.
- Answer type: see below.
- Required: customers must answer before they can continue to the next section.
- Visible to customers: turn off to hide the question without deleting it.
- Key: generated from the question when you first save it, and never changes afterwards. Rules and formulas use the key to refer to the question.
Below the form, Used by rules lists every rule that checks or changes this question. Click one to open it. When you edit an existing question, a change history panel shows earlier versions.
Answer types
| Type | Customers see | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Yes / No | Two big cards. | Optional extras: “Add a weather seal?” |
| Pick one | A set of choices; one can be selected. | The main decisions: door type, material, size. |
| Pick many | A set of choices; any number can be selected. | Accessories, add-ons. |
| Number | A number field with a stepper. | Quantities and measurements: openings, linear feet. |
| Text | A free-form text box. | Notes like “Gate code” or “Anything else we should know?” Text answers are saved on the quote, but avoid building rules on them. |
Changing the type of an existing question can break rules that check it. The editor warns you and lists the rules affected. If you switch a pick-one or pick-many question to another type, its answer options stop showing.
Pick one and pick many: how the choices look
Under How the choices look:
- Large tiles: big cards, with images if you add them. Best for the main choice in a section.
- Compact list: dense rows. Best for accessories and long lists.
Number questions
- Minimum and Maximum: leave blank for no limit. Both must stay within your store-wide largest number setting.
- Allow decimals: off means whole numbers only. Turn on for measurements like 2.5 m.
Using this number in a formula? Formulas refer to the question by its key. A question first saved as “How many openings?” gets the key
how_many_openings. For shorter formulas, give the question a short label like “Openings” when you create it (keyopenings), then change the label to the full wording; the key doesn’t change. See Formulas.
Answer options
Pick-one and pick-many questions need options. Save the question first, then use + Add option in the Answer options panel.
- Label: what’s on the card, for example “Automatic”.
- Description (optional): a short line under the label, for example “Opens with a remote”.
- Visible to customers: off hides just this option.
- Image (optional): JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP, up to 2 MB. Image cards only appear when every visible option on the question has an image. The panel tells you how many have one, for example “2 of 4 visible options have an image”.
- Parts added by this choice: see the next section.
Reorder options with the arrows. Add at least two, or customers have nothing to choose between. Like questions, options get a key from their first label, and Used by rules shows which rules refer to them.
Parts added by an answer
This is the simplest way to price your configurator, and it covers most cases.
On a pick-one or pick-many option, open the option and use + Add part under Parts added by this choice. Pick the part, set Qty, and save. When a customer picks that option, the part goes on the quote. You can attach several parts to one option. For example, “Automatic” might add an opener and a remote.
On a yes/no question, use Parts added by the answer. There are two lists, one for Yes and one for No. Most of the time you only fill in Yes.
Qty is how many go on the quote. To make it follow a number question, change Fixed qty to per Openings (or whichever number question you pick). The quantity is then Qty × that answer: Qty 1 per Openings on a 3-opening job adds 3, Qty 2 adds 6. Until the customer answers the number question, or while it’s hidden, the part isn’t added. Fractions are billed in whole units, rounded up.
If two sources add the same part, the quantities add up. If an option and a rule both add REMOTE with quantity 1, the quote shows 2 remotes.
When to ask it
Some questions only make sense for some customers, like opener questions for a manual door. Under When to ask it, click + Add a check and pick what has to be true, for example Door type equals Automatic. With two or more checks, choose whether all or any of them have to match.
Until the checks match, the question is hidden. While it’s hidden:
- customers don’t see it, on the page or on the review screen
- a required question doesn’t block them
- its answer doesn’t add parts or count in any rule
If the customer goes back and changes their answer so the question shows again, the answer they gave earlier comes back.
A rule can still show or hide the question on top of this. You don’t need one for the everyday “only ask this when…” case.
Reorder, hide and delete questions
- Use the arrows in the list to reorder questions within a section. You need to pick a section in the filter first.
- To retire a question, turn off Visible to customers. Its answers on old quotes stay intact.
- Deleting a question is blocked while something still uses it: a rule, another question’s When to ask it check, or a part whose quantity is “per” this question. The message says what’s using it, so you can change that first.
